The soffit is the underside of the roof ovehang. The fascia is the vertical piece generally found at the edge of the roof and behind the gutters. Covering those areas will protect the wood from dry rot and prevent infiltration by squirrels and birds. Once done, it will also make those areas maintenance free with no more painting.
