Air, Argon & Krypton Filled Windows
If you’re at the point in your replacement window search that you’re looking at window fill, chances are good that you’ve chosen a manufacturer and perhaps even a window series. Some lines of windows come as argon or krypton filled windows standard. For others, it is an upgrade. If you’re struggling as to whether the upgrade is worth it, here is what you should know.
Science Behind Double and Triple Pane Windows
The reason for double or triple pane windows is that the space between the glass reduces energy transference. This space, filled with air, argon or krypton most commonly, helps the air conditioned or heated air stay in your home while keeping the air outside there. You save money on your heating and cooling costs when you upgrade from single to multiple pane windows.
Why Upgrade from Air
Both krypton and argon are inert gasses that are heavier than air. The heavier a gas, the better it is at slowing down the energy transference. That is what makes a krypton or argon gas glass filled window more energy efficient than an air filled one. Argon is about six times denser than air while Krypton is twice that. However, argon is second to air in the gases between glass in popularity. In short, if you upgrade to argon windows, they are more energy efficient than air. If you choose krypton, those windows, assuming they’re made the same way, are more energy efficient than both air and argon filled windows.
Is it Really Worth it?
That depends on your goals. If you want the most energy efficient home, then yes, choosing Krypton may be the right answer for you. However, if you’re looking for an energy efficient window at an affordable price that will improve your home’s energy efficiency over your current single pane windows, then you likely want an air-filled window.
